Diaries During Lockdown
“COVID19 Ethical Systems Stories” is a network of professionally trained mathematical modelers who are using the tools of system dynamics and systems thinking to explain many of the complex choices facing individuals, organizations, and governments as we collectively grapple with the COVID19 pandemic. We have chosen to translate mathematically-based insights into verbally-based system stories so that we can make these insights available to as wide an audience as possible.
David’s Rants
For 45 years between 1973 and 2018, David Andersen trained and then worked in the fields of System Dynamics, Public Policy, and Information Science. His academic career was largely focused on teaching and professional writing. Since 2018, he has enjoyed being able to write for himself and for non-academic audiences. When compared to the stricter demands of academic writing, he characterizes this kind of writing as “rants”, which he sees as hopefully interesting writing for purposes of self-aware reflection that are not intended to meet the rigorous standards of peer-reviewed publication.

Deborah began her journey into the fiber arts more than 65 years ago when her grandmother first taught her to knit when she was 5 years old. She currently focuses her design and teaching on spinning, knitting, weaving, and dyeing. In addition to designing products and patterns, teaching classes and preparing learning materials, Deborah maintains a limited line of fiber products for sale.
In 1978, Deborah and David Andersen, newly arrived to Albany, NY bought a few acres around a 19th century farmhouse in the hamlet of Unionville in the town of New Scotland New York. Today, those few acre have expanded to a small, 40 acre, sheep farm that supports Deborah’s interest in the fiber arts. We raised our three daughters in this place and since 2012 we have been living in three generations at this place with one of our daughters, her husband and two (soon to be three) children. We are two retired University Professors who enjoy living in the country.

David F. Andersen is Distinguished Service Professor of Public Administration and Information Science at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, University at Albany--SUNY. He is a founding fellow at the Center for Technology in Government, an information systems R&D center for the state of New York.Professor Andersen holds an AB in Mathematics and Social Sciences from Dartmouth College. He holds a PhD in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
